Love the game, but not the packaging,
This game is truly a lot of fun. There are little quests to complete, secrets, and the use of the stylus adds a nice aspect to a game about magic…
That being said, I want to focus on the packaging for a moment. You can read more thorough reviews on the game in other posts, but I wanted to express my concerns about how this game comes packaged.
If you are a collector, this is definitely worth buying. The stylus is cute, the mini Harry Potter lego figure is great. Beyond that, there are a few concerns about this package that you should be aware of, especially if you are buying this game for a younger child.
- The Stylus, while cute, does not fit into the DS itself. This is true for many of the “collector’s” type styli, and is not a huge concern but it is worth mentioning.
- The mini Lego figure could definitely be a choking hazard, but that is sort of a given. It can be attached to the top of the stylus for added fun.
- The packaging for the game itself is poorly constructed — rather than having a hard case that the game can snap into and store easily, this edition comes with a cardboard sleeve. The game is tucked down into the sleeve in such a way that it is hard to get out, so I could definitely see an impatient or careless child just ripping the cardboard within seconds to dig the game out, which would leave you with nowhere to store the game.
I really expected this package to still have a hard case. The size of the box suggested that it would have a hard case packed inside, and that the added box space was to include the stylus. The flimsy cardboard packaging was really a disappoint. At the time I purchased this game, it was more expensive than the regular edition (the price has evened out now, and will probably change) but I didn’t feel like I was getting my money’s worth with the packaging.
If you keep all your games in some type of organizer pouch, or have a case for the DS that includes game storage slots, this wont be a problem. I just wanted to be clear that this edition DOES NOT come with a hard plastic case like regular DS games usually do.
Other than that, I think this is a great game for kids and adults alike, and definitely recommend it for fans of Harry Potter, as well as fans of the Lego series games.

|Lego Harry Potter years 1-4 for the DS,
This is absolute, splendid fun. It is amazing to explore the places that I’ve only seen in the films. I’ve played some Harry Potter games on the Playstation before, but this is by far the best version. The kids, their dad, and I are all completely addicted. I would have to say the best feature is: Being able to use the stylus to cast spells. On the PS, I was horrible at aiming, jumping and avoiding falling into pits, etc. The stylus control is so precise, that it’s practically impossible to fall off any jumped-to surface, and nearly impossible to miss your target when spell-casting as well. You simply start with the stylus near your character, and quickly swipe it toward the enemy. It’s that simple. Usually (we’re only on year 1 so far), one swipe/cast will crumple your enemy into tiny blocks.
The crumbling blocks is another excellent feature. We have never played Lego video games before. I absolutely love not being able to die. And I think it’s great for children, as well. It takes so much pressure off you when you’re exploring, not wondering whether you’ll die or not. So far, I only have 4 hearts. If I manage to lose them (the easiest place to lose them, for me, is when the little red blobs in the Forbidden Forest pop up and chase you), you merely crumble, and then you immediately assemble yourself again, starting at the exact same point. No going back to the beginning of the level, or checkpoints. I have noticed that you must complete the level and return to the Room of Requirement in order to completely save your progress.
The game has wonderful re-playability. There is so much to see and do, and you generally learn another spell or skill each time you take a new class (Transfiguration, Potions, etc). After you’ve completed the level, you can return in Free Play. Here, you can often access items and places that you could not do so before you got such-and-such spell, character etc. You can change characters mostly anytime you want. So far we’ve only gotten 10, but there are loads more. What really warms my heart is that (spoiler)…..you can acquire Lily Potter and play as her. I’m assuming James will become available later. She is a glowing blue and floats just above the ground. So far, she cannot cast any magic, but she can go through bars and gates, where other characters cannot.
I am stuck on the Fluffy part so far. The game really challenges you to think outside the box, and search for answers, but it is not so difficult as to leave you frustrated. It’s rewarding to keep playing and discover more rewards, characters, etc. And I also enjoy the silly nature: Ron grooving out on the trumpet; casting head-enlargement spells at friendly characters, etc.
Highly recommend this game. We got the one with the special stylus with Harry on top. This is by far one of my favorite DS games of all time, and it has me seriously thinking about playing other Lego games as well.

|My 9 year old son thinks it is the best DS game EVER!,
I have never played it myself, but of the 20 or so games my son has (including Lego Star Wars and Indiana Jones) this one is by far his favorite.
